1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Jack and I have been attending Early Childhood Family Education classes through the school district for about a year now.  It was been a wonderful experience and we plan to participate as long as we can (till he starts kindergarten).  Jack loves the songs, the games, the interaction with other toddlers... Mama loves the songs, the games, the interaction with other mamas!  Besides all the fun and games, the learning that happens right before your very eyes is amazing.  He is learning about routines, waiting his turn, sharing, exploring, how to treat others, and plenty of other lifelong skills.

I was invited to sit on the advisory board with a few other parents and employees from the school and school district.  We meet once a month and discuss the program, school district finances and funding and anything else pertinent to ECFE and School Readiness (preschool).  The board decided to start a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program, encouraging parents and kids age 0-5 to read on a daily basis.  It's a collaboration between the school and the library.

Sounds like a good idea, right?

I thought, heck, that's easy.  We read books all the time. Except that when I started to record what and when we were reading, it wasn't every day.  Well, that has been corrected.  Now it's every day, maybe the same book three times over, haha, but every day.

So... as the kids reach certain milestones on that march to 1000 books, they get little rewards.  Stickers, a coupon for an ice cream cone, a pack of crayons, a small toy, stuff like that. But the program needs more rewards!  If you or your company have anything to donate, that would be appropriate for the under age 5 crowd, contact me!

I'm proud to be part of a community that is giving our kids such a good start.  YAY GLENCOE!
